Can I bring my dog to sunset rock on Lookout Mountain TN?
Yes, dogs are allowed at sunset rock! Although I highly recommend having your dog on a leash or harness for their safety, the edge of the cliff isn't blocked off. For their safety and the safety of the wildlife leashes are highly encouraged.
I'm a horse and dog photographer in the Chattanooga Tennessee area and I photographed two dogs at sunset rock one early here is what I have to say as a canine photographer and a lifelong dog trainer, owner, and lover.
Is sunset rock safe for dogs?
The walking/viewing area is broad with enough space to walk around, sit and enjoy the view. The drop off comes up quicker than you expect and is about 100 feet. It's sudden, steep, and has no border or protection from the edge. If you dog doesn't respect a collar, leash, or harness maybe leave them at home, otherwise sunset rock is a great place to sit down with your dog and enjoy the peaceful view.
Where do you park?
Sunset rock is accessed through a small parking lot on West Brow Road that has about 8 parking spaces. I highly recommend backing into a spot if possible. Going early in the morning meant we didn't have an issue finding a spot and the lot didn't fill up before we left. On a sunset evening expect it to fill up!
Why go early?
Sunset gets all the attention and the light is right in your face. Morning time has it's own appeal like softer lighting, fewer to no people, cooler temperatures for dogs, and INCREDIBLE colors. On the morning that I went there was fog in the valley that made for incredible photos. The view is worth the early morning.
Quick tips for bringing your dog
- Use a sturdy leash, not a retractable one
- If your dog pulls on their leash prepare yourself as the walk down isn't long but it's steep and rocky.
